The Origin of Jesus Christ: From Judah to David

Matthew 1:1-3-

(KJV)The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar, and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;


Judah is the fourth son of the patriarch Jacob and his first wife, Leah. He was the peacemaker who prevented his full brothers from killing Joseph and persuaded them to sell him instead (Genesis 37: 26-27) 26And Judah said unto his brothers, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers were content. Judah then left his brothers and tribe and went to live somewhere else: Genesis 381And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

Genesis 38

3-Perez and Zerah

These are the twin boys conceived from Tamar by her father-in-law; Judah. These children were raised for her first husband Er, Judah’s firstborn as per the Jewish custom of those days. Describing the birth of the twins, we read in Genesis 3827And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. 29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How have you broken forth? this breach be upon you: therefore his name was called Perez. 30And afterwards came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah. We establish, then, that Perez was the firstborn of the twins. He conceived Hezron who gave birth to Ram.


Matthew 1: 4

4And Ram begat Amminidab; and Amminidab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon;

From Benjamin to Perez there’s one generation (100 years). From Perez to Hezron; one generation =>200 years. From Hezron to Ram (Aram);  one generation =>300 years. And from Ram to Amminadab another generation =>400 years. Ram and his son Amminadab‘s names are mentioned in several places in the Old Testament:

  1. Amminadab is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 15:10 as being a leader of a tribe: “10Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twelve.
  2. and in 1 Chronicles 2:1010And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah;.”

In Numbers 1 (also similar text in 1 Chronicle 15:10,11): “1And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, … saying, 2Take you the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, …4And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers. 5And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Amminadab. Numbers 2: “3And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah encamp according to their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah4And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. Numbers 7:10-1210And the leaders offered for the dedicating of the altar in the day that it was anointed, even the leaders offered their offering before the altar.  12And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah: Numbers 10:11-14 11And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony. 12And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran. 13And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 14In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over its host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.   Exodus 6:23 “23And Aaron took him Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon, as wife; and she bore him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ” Ref:



Matthew 1: 5

5And Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

Hebrew: שַׂלְמוֹןŚalmōn or Salmah (שַׂלְמָה Śalmāh, Greek: σαλμων) he was mentioned in both the Old and New Testament. Salma was a son of a leader (Nahshon), from the tribe of Judah.  Nahshon was present with Moses during the exodus from Egypt and thus Salma could be a contemporary of Joshua and also part of the generation of Israelites who entered the promised land. Although Nahshon was the leader of Judah in the desert, this might have changed with his son Salma after entering the Promised Land for we know that Salma’s son Boaz was just a landowner. His wife’s name is Rahab.  Some sources link his wife with the harlot of Jericho who was also called Rahab, but this is very unlikely. Salmon conceived Boaz (or Booz) who was the great-grandfather of David.
According to the Biblical genealogies, Salmon is the patrilineal great-grandfather of King David. Salmon is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:10-11, Ruth 4:20,21, Matthew 1:4-5 and Luke 3:32.


“5And Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; …;” He is mentioned in 1 Chronicle 2:10-11,  [p;.l, Ruth 2:1 (link below), 1Chronicles 2:10-11 lists Boaz among the ancestors of King David. Boaz was the son of Salmon (Salmah) from Rahab. Other biblical sources (see above) state that his grandfather (Nahshon) was the leader of the tribe of Judah. “5…; and Obed begat Jesse;” In Hebrew, ôbēd is written = עוֹבֵד – This word may come from the root verb: ע – ב – ד – Abada – In Aramaic and Arabic, this means to serve and to worship.  There is a composed verb “” in Arabic meaning to enslave, hence the noun “abd” (plural “a.beed” which means slave(s). There is also another plural to this noun (abd) in Arabic, which is “Obed” meaning people (referring to the creation of God). This plural noun is phonetically the nearest to the name (Obed) we’re studying here. But whether this name comes from the root and words we’ve recorded in this study, is impossible to know for sure. Obed’s name is mentioned in four genealogies; Matthew 1:5,  Ruth 4:17, Luke 3:32, and finally 1 Chronicle 2:12. In the Tanakh, Obed was the son of Boaz from Ruth, the father of Jesse, and the grandfather of King David. He was also named as one of Jesus’ ancestors in the genealogies recorded in the Gospel of both Matthew and Luke. Most of what we know about Obed is the fact that he was conceived by wealthy and godly parents from the house of Judah and that God blessed his birth. His mother’s mother-in-law was to be considered his own grandmother and she was to partake in his upbringing. Obed was also to bear the name of his mother’s first husband who was to be considered his legal father. He was to inherit the state that Elimelech and his sons owned. Also, from the information gathered about his son Jesse, we can conclude that Obed remained in Bethel because his son dwelt there.  This also tells us that he lived at least until adulthood since he became the father of Jesse. He was most likely a farmer and herd keeper as this was the occupation of both Boaz and Jesse. Other biblical clues could testify about his character and thus the type of life Obed lived. Observing the tree of King David from Judah to Jesse and the care that God put into it, one can only conclude that to be in the genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ, one needed to have certain qualities and to be of a very good character. You may recall that in Genesis 38, God took away the husbands of Tamar because they were not fit to take part in the genealogy of our Lord and were described by the pejorative adjective: evil. The four chapters of the book of Ruth were dedicated to the description of the character of both Boaz and Ruth, whom together with God’s special blessing, made Obed. If there is nothing much said about Obed, it is not because he was not a godly man, but because God did not choose to speak to us during and through the man’s life.
